Support at Queen of Apostles

Supporting students who are experiencing difficulties in their education is highly valued at Queen of Apostles. We want to ensure all students are given the opportunity to develop and progress. In order to assist this, we have a number of Support programs in place which are targeted at developing the skills and confidence of the students in our school.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is offered at Queen of Apostles as part of Literacy Support. It is an intensive intervention, focussing primarily on Year 1 students who are experiencing difficulty with learning to read. Children are selected after the administration of specific tests to all the Year 1 cohort. Upon selection, the students have individual lessons daily with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. The lessons are conducted over a period of twelve to twenty weeks and focus on the key skills of decoding words, comprehending texts, developing fluency and understanding how to use meaning, and structure when reading texts.

Multi Lit

In 2015 we introduced the MULTI LIT(Making Up Lost Time In Literacy) Reading Tutor Program to Queen of Apostles.
Children from Year 2 to Year 6 who require further support in developing reading and spelling skills participate in this program.
The Multi Lit Reading Tutor Program is a literacy intervention and reflects a contemporary approach to best practice literacy instruction.
The Program teaches phonics, sight words and how to generalize these skills into connected text, which will assist in improving students' reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension.
The Program caters for students who have not acquired the basic skills needed to become functional readers.
The Multi Lit Program involves intensive, systematic and explicit instruction in three main areas:

  • Phonics (or word attack skills) including accuracy, fluency and spelling
  • High frequency sight word recognition to access text quickly
  • Supported book reading, known as Reinforced Reading.

MiniLit

In 2016, we began the MINILIT Literacy Program. This program is based on small group instruction (5 students) and runs four days a week. It is targeted towards a group of Year Two children who require further support with reading. The program takes about 20 weeks to complete, with four lessons of up to 60 minutes per week and includes regular curriculum-based measures to monitor the progress of the students.

Special Needs

Queen of Apostles is an inclusive school which caters for Students with a Disability and are accessing the Western Australian school curriculum. A Learning Support Coordinator works in assisting the children and their families to access therapies, funding and learning strategies. Assisting the children in class, dependent on their learning needs, are Teacher Assistants who are passionate about helping the children in their care reach the individual learning goals developed between the school, the home and relevant outside agencies.

Teacher Assistants and Support Teachers

We believe it is imperative to maximize the learning of as many children as possible. To help us achieve this the school employs Teacher Assistants in Kindy, Pre-Primary, Year One, Year Two and Year Three. These Teacher Assistants work with small groups or individuals to provide the opportunity for targeted learning to take place.
There are also two Support Teachers, who work collaboratively with the classroom teachers in supporting those students requiring extra assistance and implement programs that target the individual needs of the students.
